In the Southeastern part of Samos, at the community periphery of Paleokastro village, is a small (150 acres), but special environmental importance, wetland of Alyki (= saltworks, Αλυκή in Greek), with rich and rare biodiversity, unusual for the Aegean islands. From antiquity (probably) and until 1965, the wetland basin was used as a saltworks area for salt production. After saltworks abandonment, nature immediate showed signs of regeneration, and was turn saltworks area into a rich wetland. During winter months (~November ~April), the clay soil of the basin substrate, retains the water and creating a shallow lake, with surface 150 acres and maximum depth about 70 cm. During this period it hosts a large population of migratory birds, and other endemic animals, thus enriching the biodiversity of the wider habitat. During summer months (~May ~October), the water evaporates, the lake dries up, and the biodiversity of the habitat is degraded, eagerly awaiting its new life cycle. The large population and the variety of migratory birds, owe significantly to the geographical location of Alyki, which located between two important wetlands on the coasts of Asia Minor. Beach Psili ammos (Marathokampou)
(or "Chrisi ammos" as it's also known)is of the most famous beaches of Samos. The beach is surrounded by many pines creating thus a attractive picture, while the golden sand and shallow water make it appealing for swimming and child-friendly. At the east of the beach is a quite big cave for much shade and coolness.
Is a quiet picturesque beach, “hidden” from the busy surroundings. On the back, there is a natural wall (precipice), 20 m height, which protects from the air. Walking west of the beach, you will come across other smaller beaches, whose size and quality (sandy beach, pebbles, rocks), depends of the last winter weathers.
It’s comfortable and quiet beach without waves. Half of the beach is organized with sun beds and umbrellas for rent of the beach bars, while the other half retains its natural character. The name Kukunara, comes from the nickname of a fisherman who used to cast his net around this beach, at the period of 40s 60s.

(or "Votsalakia" as it's also known)It’s one of the most famous beaches of Samos. The great length and width of the beach (with many access points), making it comfortable and quiet, with choice of one of the many bustling beach bar or isolate yourself with your own umbrella. The water is crystal clear, with some wind days (mostly direction from the land to the sea), during the summer period.

Panagia Vronda Monastery

The history of the cave begins from the ancient times, since there are indications that in the cave lived the Samian Sibyl “Phyto” (Sibyl where a women in trance who prophesied the future). In the Byzantine years and then the same cave was used as a sacred place of Christianity and as a place of asceticism.

Tower of Sarakini
The symbol of reoccupation of SamosTower of Sarakini, It is the oldest tower that built it on the island and dates from 1577. It was the residence of “Nicholas Sarakinis”, one of the first inhabitants of Samos after reoccupation of the island at 1572.
The “Genoan Castle” or “Kastraki of Panagia Potamiou” (as it is known to locals) it’s a small fortress built by the Genoans at 13th century or later.
The General State Archives of Samos prefecture (G.S.A.), is the current name of “Samos Historical Archive”, which is evolution of “Samos public archives” that was created in 1882 by the Hegemonic administration, in order to retain archives of public services of the autonomous state of Samos.

Tunnel of Eupalinos
World Heritage Monument since 1992The aim of the project was to supply water from the source of “Ayades”, (hidden at the mountain away from enemies), to the ancient city of Samos, through mount “Kastron”. The result was a remarkable water pipeline, total length 2,385 meters, of which 1,035 through tunnel.
Temple of Hera
World Heritage Monument since 1992Only one column is still standing today, preserved up to half of its original height, while the foundations are preserved up to the base of the walls and the stylobate. Began construction of the temple in 540 BC by “Rhoikos” sons, Theodore and Teleklis. The temple was never completed because of Polycrates death in 522 BC.

Folklore museum of Karlovasi
Journey to the PastAround 1,200 exhibits covering a chronological period stretching from 1870 to 1955 and combine elements of rural and urban folklore.
The museum is housed in an old tannery stone building and reflects the history of tanning industry in Karlovasi town, which culminated from the middle of 19th century till middle of 20th.
The museum includes several halls which travel the visitor in times of traditional winemaking and barrel manufacturing. There are tools that are used by coopers era. Characteristic is the huge wooden tanks that have been preserved until today and impress with their size, the largest is 80 tons.
Exhibits, which come from the monasteries and churches of Samos, submit and transport the visitors to another time and give them the image of timeless church life and the local ecclesiastical art, uniting together the farthest historical past with the present and presage the future.
The exhibits it’s mostly of finds from Pythagoreion area, classified chronologically and thematically. Presents aspects of the historical and cultural development of ancient Samos from the Neolithic era (4th millennium BC) to late antiquity (7th century AD.).
It’s mostly full of finds from the Heraion of Samos site (more about the Heraion in a following post) and contains collections with Archaic Sculpture, Pottery, Bronzes, Ivory objects, Wooden items, Clay figurines, Small objects.
The green slopes of Ampelos mountain (or Karvounis) that reach the sea, the view to the sea till Asia Minor, create a scene that is a key feature of the village.
Ampelos village
Samos balconyThe village is oriented to the north, on a slope with 40% grade and this giving the impression of a balcony over the Aegean Sea, with excellent view from east to the west and reaches till Chios island and Asia Minor coast. It’s a preserved traditional village, with plenty of water, surrounded with lush vegetation, vineyards and orchards.
It is located in a area with lush vegetation, covered with forest of pines trees mixed with vineyards and beautiful view to the north. There’s abundance of crystal water and the village has many narrow streets and traditional houses.
It’s built on downhill ground with beautiful view to the sea. Its houses are close to its other, separated by narrow maze streets, a characteristic more intense than any other Samian village, which gives a very beautiful picturesque character.
Kokkari village
The Rock star of SamosOriginally built as settlement by residents of Mytilinii village, early 19th century, over the old Christian settlement ruins.
Ireon Settlement was the seaport of Pagondas and Mili villages. The old settlement consisted of a few fisherman huts which were built on the beachfront. They came here, mostly during the summer months for fishing, and during the winter moved to the villages Pagondas and Mili, which are a little higher at the northwest.
Is in the sothwestern part of the island, just 4,5 km from Marathokampo village and 16,5 Km from Karlovasi. Administratively belongs to the “municipal community of Marathokampos”
Platanos village
Τhe Aegean sea at your feetPlatanos is located at the center of the island. Lying at the west foot of “Ambelos” (or Karvounis) mountain, 11 km distance, south from Karlovasi, with excellent north, south, west views to Aegean sea and to the island of Samos.

Marathokampos it is lying southeast at the foot of “Kerkis” mountain, on the hillside “Fterias”. Built amphitheatrically, with stunning southwest view of the islands of Fourni, Patmos, Arki, Lipsi, Agathonisi Samiopoula even in Leros and kalimno, when the weather permits.

Tanning industry in Karlovasi
Tanning in Karlovasi flourished between 1880 and 1930, when more than 50 tanneries operated with 300 workers and the exported leather products amounted to an average of 12.4% of the total island’s exports … At the end of the 19th century, in parallel with the industrial development of the Eastern Aegean, two dynamic industrial branches were created in Samos island, the tannery in Karlovasi and the tobacco industry in the city of Samos. Despite fierce competition in the wider region and the limitations of semi-autonomous Hegemonic Samos in terms of foreign relations, the development of a banking system and its own currency, industries had flourished for more than half a century. The first small tanneries on the island appear in the first quarter of the 19th century, on the outskirts of the city of Samos (Port of Vathi) in the area called “Tabakika”. But their course was short and without success. Probably the location near the city was not favorable, in the closed bay, where the stench of the sewage, caused discomfort and their operation, nuisance to the residents of the capital and to the administrative authorities of the Hegemony.
