History

The port of Pythagorio (“soil in the sea” as described by Herodotus), is the oldest artificial port of the world, and one of the largest projects on tyranny Polycrates (541-522 BC). Around 530 BC, they built a large pier at the west, length 360 m., which protected the harbor from the south, the only weather that affect the region. The surface was initially 66000 sq.m. which significantly reduced the natural silting.
Much later, in 1863 constructed the eastern small pier, which broke up the old port in two.
